Title: To cooperate, or not to cooperate, that is the question. Strategic analysis for the implementation of industrial symbiosis

Abstract: Industrial symbiosis is acknowledged as a pivotal strategy for companies aiming to facilitate the transition towards a circular economy. By utilizing waste generated from one production process as inputs and raw materials for other production processes, companies can simultaneously achieve economic and environmental benefits. However, the adoption of industrial symbiosis remains limited among companies. One significant barrier is the lack of adequate support in strategic decision-making. From the strategic perspective, the current literature predominantly focuses on the cooperation between waste producers and waste users to replace primary inputs with waste. This seminar will explore an alternative model of industrial symbiosis, termed “new product development,” which is based on competition rather than cooperation. The traditional cooperative approach will be compared with a competitive new product development strategy. Consequently, companies interested in implementing industrial symbiosis must decide which model to adopt: to cooperate or not to cooperate, that is the question. Utilizing a game-theoretical model, the seminar will examine the impact of market characteristics, investment requirements, industrial symbiosis costs, and primary input purchase costs on the strategic choices of waste producers, providing valuable insights for managers and decision-makers.

Short bio: Luca Fraccascia, PhD in Mechanical and Management Engineering from Politecnico di Bari, is an Assistant Professor at Sapienza University of Rome. He teaches Environmental Economics and Management, as well as Marketing and Innovation Management in graduate courses. Additionally, he is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Twente (the Netherlands), where he instructs courses on Elements of Environmental Economics and Circular Sustainable Business Development. His primary research interests focus on strategies that companies can implement to support the transition towards a circular economy, with a particular emphasis on industrial symbiosis from both business and operational perspectives. His research has been published in journals such as International Journal of Production Economics, International Journal of Production Research, and Ecological Economics. He serves as an editor for Resources Conservation and Recycling Advances and as an associate editor for Sustainable Development.
