Towards Data meshes fueling MLOps
Today, data is no longer viewed as merely a tacit derivative of enterprise applications, but rather a shareable, discoverable, and composable product in itself. In the wake of this trend, the notion of a data mesh has emerged referring to a largely distributed data computing paradigm to share, discover, package, and ingest analytical data as data products.

In this keynote, we will argue how data meshes might fuel MLOps (and vice versa), facilitate frictionless collaboration between autonomous teams of data-product developers and consumers, promoting continuous delivery and integration. In addition, Prof van den Heuvel will present some early results in data products and data mesh engineering, introduce a novel meta-data model, and a roadmap with potential open collaboration avenues.

Prof. Dr. Willem-Jan van den Heuvel is a full professor in Data Engineering and Governance and acts as the scientific director of the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS)-DE Unit, which is a collaboration on data science/AI between Tilburg University and the Technical University of Eindhoven (both located in the Netherlands). Over his 25+ year career, he has established various research initiatives including ERISS (European Research Institute on Service Systems), and the International Msc. Program in Service Engineering (IMSE). ERISS (2006-2014) comprised +/- 15 researchers, including three postdoc students, two full professors, two adjunct professors and several PhD students, attracting funding for over €5 MM. More recently he was the key academic architect of newly established JADS, where he led the inception and accreditation of (under-)graduate programs on Data Science, as well as the establishment of research lines revolving around Agrofood & Data, Biodiversity & AI, and, Crime and Safety. Ice has beeb was part of the management team of JADS as the academic educational director, and later as the deputy academic executive director. He was instrumental in helping JADS emerge at the national, EU and international academic landscape, establishing a flourishing education portfolio (with over 300 students), roughly 30 FTE of academics, a scholarship program that promotes diversity (500k), and a palette of research projects including seven H2020 EU projects (with a budget over €3,5 MM), which he largely acquired.

Willem-Jan’s research passions are to be found at the cross-junction of cloud-enabled systems, Big data engineering and AI. His expertise revolves around the following major research themes: serverless computing and FaaS, Big data pipeline and processing architectures, (micro-)service engineering (including service governance), MLOps and DataOps, Blockchain & Federated Data Architectures, and Legacy System Modernization.
